Psalm 23
Who wants to be a sheep?
The twenty-third Psalm begins, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” While we often think of this phrase as a comforting and beautiful affirmation of God’s love for us, we rarely stop to think of its implications. If God is our Shepherd, that makes us sheep. Mindless, passive, dependant animals that will follow anything that catches their attention. Stupid creatures that must be watched at all times lest they be a detriment to themselves. Yet that’s how the Bible refers to God’s people time and time again.
If God is to be our Shepherd, then we need to be His sheep. We must surrender our stubborn wills to His direction, bow to his discipline, and acknowledge His sovereignty over all heaven and earth.
