Marissa is carried crying and screaming into her grandmother's house because she is took sick to join the family on a holiday vacation. Marissa is convinced that this must be the most horrible and disappointing Christmas ever. Her grandmother is grieving the loss of her husband and decides to reveal an old photo of herself gazing with love into the eyes of a man who was NOT Marissa's grandfather. And so Marrisa learns the secret past of her grandmother Emily. As Emily relives memories of a Christmas just after World War II had ended, the two discover that tidings of comfort and joy that point us to the true meaning of Christmas are the most precious gifts of the season.
